PC-DMIS PuzzlerWelcome to our new monthly contest. Here’s how it works. We’ll pose a question about PC-DMIS programming or a puzzling metrology question, on this site and in our e-newsletter "Points of Interest". You submit your well reasoned answers, and any supporting material. The following month, we’ll reveal the solution, and from all the correct answers received, we will draw a winner at random. The winner will receive their choice of a custom embroidered Easy Care sport shirt with your choice of color and one of 7 embroidered brand logos from www.HexagonStore.com (retail value $22).

July 2008 PC-DMIS Puzzler #2 The Pin That Wasn’t There

Puzzler #2 comes from the case files of the EMSleuth, the metrology gumshoe that inhabits the pages of Tooling and Production Magazine on a regular basis (see his other case archives on the site here ). The puzzle (or mystery, as it were), is as follows:

Many prints still have the callout "Distance over a Pin" for threads. The old-fashioned method of doing this, of course, was to insert actual pins of a known diameter into the thread and measure. Seeing as we’re now in the 21st century, we have PC-DMIS on a DCC CMM or a Vision based measuring machine to measure this. So this month’s puzzler question is: How do you measure Distance over a Pin with PC-DMIS, without inserting pins into the threads? You may answer the question either in the context of PC-DMIS for CMMs or PC-DMIS Vision.

PC-DMIS Puzzler #2

The rules are the same as before, you submit your well reasoned answers, and any supporting material. The next month, we’ll reveal the solution, and from all the correct answers received, we will draw a winner at random. The winner will receive their choice of a custom embroidered Easy Care sport shirt with your choice of color and one of 7 embroidered brand logos from www.HexagonStore.com (retail value $22).
